This comprehensive two-part training program offers a unique opportunity to deepen your understanding of the science behind yoga and mindfulness.

Through a combination of lectures, hands-on exercises, and practical applications, you’ll gain a comprehensive understanding of the neurobiological effects of these ancient practices. Taught using the latest neuroscience research and polyvagal theory, this program explores how yoga therapy and mindfulness practices can enhance resiliency, optimism, self-regulation, health, and mood states.

This training will provide:

  • An overview of Neuroscience and how this field supports and aligns with the field of Yoga and Yoga Therapy.
  • A foundational understanding of neuroscience theory and research and how yoga and meditation impacts on brain chemistry, plasticity, and mood management.
  • Experiential opportunities for understanding and applying specific asanas, breathing, meditation, and cognitive revamping through a combined lens of yoga and neuroscience.
  • How polyvagal theory can be applied to yoga therapy treatment options.

This training is designed for yoga teachers, yoga therapists, mental health workers, and medical personnel who would like to understand the intersection between yoga and neuroscience and how and why the practices of yoga and meditation work.

Participants will leave this program understanding:

  • The Five Foundational Concepts of Neuro-Yoga Psychology
  • How yoga and meditation practices impact on our brain chemistry and on our neurobiology.
  • A review of research studies supporting the impact of yoga-based practices.
  • Neuro-Yoga practices for mental and emotional health and vagal nerve regulation
  • Breathing and asanas for nervous system regulation.
  • Concepts of Neurotheology
  • How Neuro-Yoga can be used and taught within a yoga or meditation class.

When you register for this 5-day in-person training at Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat you are signing up for Part Two of a 45 hour professional certification course.

In our order to qualify for the professional certification you must first take Part One, the online program Neuroscience, Yoga & Mindfulness: Powerful Healing Strategies for the Mind with Mala Cunningham (see link below). You must complete Part One before November 3, 2023 to qualify for the in-person training at the ashram.

This course is registered and accredited with Yoga Alliance and the International Association for Yoga Therapists.

M. Mala Cunningham, Ph.D., C-IAYT, is a counseling psychologist and certified yoga therapist. She is also on the faculty at the University of Virginia School of Nursing where she teaches courses in lifestyle management and medical yoga to health professionals.
