This inspiring course will focus on chapter eight which teaches the most profound teachings about the eternal nature of the Soul, the imperishable Brahman, and the path to attaining liberation through unwavering devotion and mindfulness at the time of death.
Chapter 8 of the Bhagavad Gita is known as “Akshara Brahman” or “The Yoga of The Imperishable Brahman”. This chapter focuses on the nature of the eternal soul, the imperishable Brahman, and the path to liberation. Krishna explains to Arjuna that the material world is transient, but the soul is eternal and indestructible. He describes how those who focus their minds on the Supreme at the time of death can attain liberation. Krishna also outlines two paths for souls after death: one that leads to liberation and union with the Divine, and another that leads back to the cycle of rebirth. These teachings provide guidance on how to live a life of spiritual discipline, leading to liberation from the cycle of birth and death and union with the eternal Divine
Key Teachings
Eternal nature of the soul:
The soul (Atman) is eternal and indestructible, transcending the physical body, which is perishable. While the body undergoes birth and death, the soul remains unchanged, existing beyond the material world.
Krishna explains the critical importance of one’s mental state at the moment of death. If one can focus on the Supreme Being in their final moments, they can transcend the cycle of reincarnation and achieve liberation. This emphasizes the need for consistent spiritual practice throughout life to ensure a spiritually aligned consciousness at the time of death.
Liberation (moksha) is possible for those who are fully devoted to the Supreme and who maintain a steady awareness of God throughout life, especially during death. Krishna teaches that devotion, faith, and constant remembrance of the Divine are key to breaking free from the cycle of birth and death.
- The path of light (Shukla Gati), for those who have practiced spiritual discipline and devotion, leading to liberation and union with the Divine.
- The path of darkness (Krishna Gati), for those still attached to worldly desires, leading to rebirth and further entanglement in the material world.
The chapter stresses the importance of consistent spiritual practice and unwavering devotion to the Divine. Through meditation, chanting, and acts of devotion, one can detach from worldly attachments and focus on the eternal truth, paving the way for liberation.
