Beyond The Changing Mind:
Chapter 14 of the Bhagavad Gita
Jnaneshwari Chaitanya
12 WEEKLY SESSIONS, Mondays, 3:00-4:30pm ET
This course is a loving and traditional study of Chapter 14 of the Bhagavad Gita, also known as The Yoga Of The Division Of The Three Gunas. In this chapter, Lord Krishna explains the three gunas—sattva (purity and harmony), rajas (activity and passion), and tamas (inertia and dullness)—the fundamental qualities of nature that shape human experience.
These three gunas influence the body, mind, emotions, behavior, desires, relationships, perception, and spiritual life. At times the mind becomes calm and clear; at other times restless, agitated, heavy, or confused. Through this teaching, we begin to understand these movements more deeply and learn how attachment to them binds the individual soul to suffering and limitation.
Among the many profound teachings of the Gita is its insight into the changing nature of the mind. Thoughts, emotions, desires, moods, restlessness, clarity, dullness, enthusiasm, confusion—all arise and pass in constant movement. Chapter 14 of the Bhagavad Gita offers a remarkable vision into the forces behind these fluctuations and reveals how freedom becomes possible through understanding them.
But Chapter 14 does not merely analyze the human condition—it points beyond it.
Lord Krishna describes the state of the one who has gone beyond the gunas, remaining inwardly steady amidst pleasure and pain, praise and blame, honor and dishonor. This state of freedom is not emotional suppression or indifference, but the discovery of a deeper center of consciousness untouched by the changing movements of nature.
Throughout the course, we will reflect on the practical and spiritual implications of these teachings and explore how they may be applied in daily life and spiritual practice. Alongside philosophical understanding, students will be encouraged to cultivate inner observation, discernment, steadiness, and non-attachment.
One of the most inspiring books in the world, the Bhagavad Gita is a dialogue between Lord Krishna and Arjuna, which took place over 5,000 years ago on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. This dialogue is a universal spiritual teaching that speaks to all, irrespective of age, culture, or background. Its wisdom embraces every aspect of human life and supports the seeker at every stage of inner growth. Millions of people around the world study the Gita and find in its teachings clarity, meaning, and a sense of inner peace.
Each chapter of the Bhagavad Gita stands complete in itself, offering its own doorway into truth and transformation. Students are therefore welcome to join this course even if they have not studied previous chapters. The journey will begin with a clear and accessible introductory session, providing the essential foundation needed to approach Chapter 14 with confidence, clarity, and depth.
“In the whole world literature there is no book so elevating and inspiring as the Gita.
It is an inexhaustible spiritual treasure. It is an ocean of knowledge.
It is a universal scripture for people of all temperaments and for all times.”
— Swami Sivananda
