The Yoga of Distinction Between the Field and the Knower of the FieldChapter 13 of the Bhagavad Gita
Jnaneshwari Chaitanya
12 WEEKLY SESSIONS, Mondays, 3:00-4:30pm ET
“In the whole world literature there is no book so elevating and inspiring as the Gita.
It is an inexhaustible spiritual treasure. It is an ocean of knowledge.
It is a universal scripture for people of all temperaments and for all times.”
— Swami Sivananda
One of the most inspiring books in the world, the Bhagavad Gita is a dialogue between Lord Krishna and Arjuna, which took place over 5,000 years ago on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. This dialogue is a universal spiritual teaching that speaks to all, irrespective of age, culture, or background. Its wisdom embraces every aspect of human life and supports the seeker at every stage of inner growth. Millions of people around the world study the Gita and find in its teachings clarity, meaning, and a sense of inner peace.
Whether you are a dedicated student of the Bhagavad Gita or a sincere seeker drawn to self-inquiry, this course offers a space to pause, turn inward, and reflect more deeply on the nature of the Self.
This course is a loving, traditional study of one of the most illuminating chapters of the Bhagavad Gita. With depth and clarity, your teacher brings Lord Krishna’s message to life, revealing how this timeless wisdom continues to guide seekers toward understanding and inner freedom.
Chapter 13 presents the path of knowledge (Jnana Yoga) as a way of coming to a clearer understanding of who we truly are. Lord Krishna gently guides us to see the difference between the field—the body and mind where all experiences take place—and the knower of the field, the quiet awareness that observes them. Through this teaching, we begin to recognize the distinction between Spirit and the changing world of matter, and to sense the Self as the steady presence behind all movement and change.
Alongside this vision, Lord Krishna speaks about the inner qualities that must be consciously developed on this path—such as humility, kindness, patience, forgiveness, self-control, devotion, and non-attachment. These qualities gradually calm and refine the mind, making it more receptive to clear understanding. As this clarity deepens, right vision begins to unfold, opening the way to an intuitive recognition of Brahman, the Supreme Reality.
Each chapter of the Bhagavad Gita stands complete in itself, offering its own doorway into understanding. Students are therefore welcome to join this course even if they have not studied previous chapters. The journey will begin with a clear and accessible introductory session, providing the essential context needed to approach Chapter 13 with confidence and clarity, and to see its place within the broader vision of the Gita.
