Vedanta: Teachings on the Essential Freedom of the Self
Swami Brahmananda
12 WEEKLY SESSIONS, Thursdays, 6:00-7:45pm ET
Course Description:
Throughout the Vedānta scriptures and teaching tradition, profound truths are often revealed through beautiful and illuminating analogies. These traditional illustrations make subtle teachings easier to grasp, allowing us to see their deeper meaning through simple images drawn from everyday life.
In this upcoming course, we will explore this rich body of Vedāntic analogies, known as Nyāyas, and use them as a doorway into some of the essential teachings of Vedānta. Through these Nyāyas, we will deepen our understanding of Adhyāropa, or superimposition; the nature of Ātman, the Self; Brahman; Māyā and the appearance of creation; the unattached and unaffected nature of the Self; the nature of bondage and freedom; and many other central themes of Vedānta.
These analogies are not merely intellectual illustrations. They are powerful tools for contemplation, helping the teachings become clearer, more immediate, and more deeply assimilated.
What you'll learn:
In this course, you will explore 35 traditional Vedāntic Nyāyas—illuminating analogies that make the profound teachings of Vedānta clear, accessible, and available for deeper reflection and contemplation.
Through these powerful illustrations, you will:
- Explore 35 traditional Vedāntic analogies (Nyāyas) and discover how the great teachers of Vedānta use simple images from everyday life to illuminate subtle truths about the Self, Brahman, Māyā, bondage, and freedom.
- Dive deeply into the classical Rajju-Sarpa-Nyāya, the snake and rope analogy, and understand the fundamental Vedāntic teaching of Adhyāropa or Adhyāsa (superimposition): how diversity, multiplicity, and the world of names and forms appear upon the one Reality, Brahman.
- Understand Apavāda – the negation of superimposition and how Vedānta leads us from mistaken identification toward the recognition of what is actually real.
- Learn Dṛg-Dṛśya Viveka the discrimination between the Seer and the seen as a practical means of recognizing that the body, senses, mind, thoughts, and experiences are objects of awareness, while the Self is the unchanging Consciousness that knows them.
- Explore the nature of bondage and freedom through Mṛgatṛṣṇā-Nyāya, the mirage in the desert. Discover how Avidyā and Māyā create delusion and entanglement, and how understanding their operation can help us cease pursuing happiness where it cannot ultimately be found and discover the freedom and happiness of the Self.
- Understand how the One appears as many and how the innumerable names and forms of creation relate to the one underlying Reality, through analogies such as gold and ornaments and other traditional Nyāyas.
- Explore the nature of Īśvara or God, the Antaryāmin or Inner Ruler, and understand how the one Divine Reality is the source, support, and inner presence of creation, illustrated through analogies such as the spider and its web.
- Discover the asaṅgatvam, the unattached and unaffected nature of Ātman. Through analogies such as the crystal and color and the lotus leaf and water, understand how Consciousness remains ever pure and untouched by the changing conditions of the body, mind, and the world.
- Understand Chidābhāsa, the reflection of Consciousness in the mind, and how the one Consciousness appears, through reflection, as many individual conscious beings while the Self itself remains one and undivided, as the one sun reflects in innumerable ponds, lakes etc.
- Explore the teaching on the Upādhis, or limiting adjuncts. Understand how body, senses, mind, thoughts, emotions, and the names and forms of creation create an apparent limitation in the limitless Self and how this limitation belongs only to ignorance, not to the Ātman itself.
- Discover how the Upādhis are not only limiting adjuncts but also manifesting mediums. When ignorance is removed, the very forms through which limitation seems to arise become means through which the presence of the limitless Reality is recognized.
- Bring the central teachings of Vedānta together through memorable traditional illustrations, allowing subtle philosophical ideas to become clearer and more immediate to enhance and deepen all aspects of your spiritual life.
