A Journey Through the Four Paths of Yoga
This year, we will dive deeply into the meaning and practice of the four paths of Yoga—Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Raja Yoga, and Jnana Yoga. Following the path step by step, we will see how the spiritual journey begins, how each Yoga prepares the way for and leads naturally into the next, and how together they form a complete path leading us from ignorance to the knowledge and realization of the Self.
These profound and practical teachings touch every dimension of our lives—our actions, relationships, emotions, mind, and understanding of who we are. Month by month, we will move more deeply into the path, gaining not only spiritual knowledge but practical guidance that can transform the way we live, practice, meet life’s challenges, and move toward the ultimate goal of Yoga—Self-realization.
⭐ Month 1 — Karma Yoga: Transforming Work into Spiritual Practice
Our days are filled with actions, duties, responsibilities, and encounters with others. Can these very activities become part of our spiritual life? A practical introduction to Swami Sivananda’s teachings on Karma Yoga and the transformative power of selfless action.
⭐ Month 2 — Karma Yoga: The Art of Action — Dynamic Peace
The remarkable state of dynamic peace is one of intense activity together with inner stillness. What makes this possible, and what prevents us from experiencing it? A teaching on the art of action, non-attachment, balance, and equanimity in the midst of everyday life.
⭐ Month 3 — Karma Yoga: When Work Becomes Worship
There is a profound difference between simply performing our daily actions and transforming them into an offering to the Divine. This session takes us deeper into Karma Yoga through Swami Sivananda’s teachings on Ishvararpana, self-surrender, freedom from doership, and work as worship.
⭐ Month 4 — Bhakti Yoga: Awakening the Heart to Divine Love
How does ordinary human love become transformed into love for God? A journey into the nature of devotion and the gradual awakening, deepening, and expression of divine love in the heart.
⭐ Month 5 — Bhakti Yoga: Living in the Presence of God
How can devotion extend beyond our formal periods of prayer and meditation and enter the whole of our day? Learn how life gradually becomes a continuous turning of the heart toward the Divine.
⭐ Month 6 — Bhakti Yoga: Surrender and the Grace of God
What does it really mean to surrender to God? What is the relationship between our own effort and Divine Grace? Swami Sivananda’s teaching takes us into one of the deepest dimensions of Bhakti—the gradual surrender of our desires, ego, will, and ultimately our entire being to the Divine.
⭐ Month 7 — Raja Yoga: Building the Foundation
Before the mind can become still, the whole of life must support the practice of Yoga. The journey begins with Yama and Niyama—ten principles that bring our conduct, relationships, habits, and inner life into harmony with the spiritual goal.
⭐ Month 8 — Raja Yoga: The Journey Inward
From the steadiness of the body to the regulation of Prana and the withdrawal of the senses, the practice of Raja Yoga gradually turns our attention from the outer world toward the inner. Asana, Pranayama and Pratyahara prepare the body, energy, and mind for the deeper practices of Yoga.
⭐ Month 9 — Raja Yoga: From Concentration to Samadhi
What is the difference between concentration and meditation, and how does one lead into the other? Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi take us into the innermost stages of Raja Yoga—from gathering the scattered rays of the mind to sustained meditation and, ultimately, the superconscious state.
⭐ Month 10 — Jnana Yoga: Preparing for the Path of Wisdom
The path of Jnana Yoga begins with preparing the mind for Self-knowledge. We will study Sadhana Chatushtaya, the fourfold qualifications of the aspirant: discrimination, dispassion, the sixfold virtues, and an intense longing for liberation.
⭐ Month 11 — Jnana Yoga: Who Am I? The Self and the Mystery of Bondage
If our true nature is the eternal, pure and perfect Atman, how do we become bound? We will look deeply into Swami Sivananda’s teachings on the body, mind and ego, and see how identification with “I” and “mine” gives rise to attachment, action, pleasure and pain, and the experience of Samsara.
⭐ Month 12 — Jnana Yoga: Awakening to the Freedom of the Self
How does the journey from bondage to liberation take place? We will follow Swami Sivananda’s teaching from ignorance and identification to Self-knowledge—understanding the role of the mind, Samskaras and Vasanas, the guidance of the Guru, and the great truth Tat Tvam Asi — Thou Art That, culminating in the realization of our true nature as Truth, Knowledge and Bliss Absolute.
