When Swami Vishnudevananda arrived in the West — in San Francisco, specifically — in 1957, he came with a mission from his master, the Indian saint and master of masters Swami Sivananda. His mission was simple: to spread the teachings of yoga.  However, upon his arrival, Swami Vishnudevananda quickly realized that the ways of yoga in India were going to have to be adjusted for the fast-paced perspectives and lifestyles of Westerners. So, he came up with a system of yoga that was easy to digest and understanding, a simple and natural programmed involving five main principles:

  1. Proper Exercise — āsanas
  2. Proper Breathing — prānāyāma
  3. Proper Relaxation — savāsana
  4. Proper Diet — vegetarian
  5. Positive Thinking and Meditation — vedānta and dhyāna
Yoga is a life of self-discipline based on the tenets of ‘simple living and high thinking’. Rukmini Chaitanya is a senior staff member of the Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat Bahamas, and the personal assistant to Swami Swaroopananda, the Acharya, or spiritual director of the Ashram. She regularly teaches the Bhagavad Gita during the Sivananda Yoga Teacher training as well as other courses on the Bhagavad Gita, Vedanta, positive thinking, meditation, and yoga philosophy.
